ImgWrench's Expo splash screen generator turns your logo into the splash icon expo-splash-screen expects: a 1024×1024 PNG with a transparent background, which Expo centres on the background colour you choose.

How to make your Expo splash screen

  1. Drop your logo into the tool above.
  2. Choose Contain to keep the whole logo, or Crop to frame it.
  3. Download the PNG and save it as splash-icon.png in assets/images.
  4. Configure the expo-splash-screen plugin in app.json, as below, then rebuild.

Expo's splash screen rules

Expo's "Splash screen and app icon" guide recommends a 1024×1024 image, a .png file and a transparent background; only PNG is supported, and other formats make production builds fail. By default Expo looks for splash-icon.png. The ios and android keys of the plugin can each have their own image, backgroundColor and size.

Testing the splash screen

App config changes only take effect after a prebuild. Test the splash screen in a preview or production build, not in Expo Go or a development build. On iOS, SDK 52 and earlier can cache launch screens: run npx expo run:ios --no-build-cache to clear them.

Why ImgWrench

  • The format Expo needs. Always a PNG, with transparency kept.
  • The recommended size. 1024×1024, logo fitted or cropped your way.
  • Private by design. Your logo never leaves your device.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make an Expo splash screen image?

Drop your logo into the tool above. It becomes a 1024×1024 PNG with a transparent background, the image Expo recommends for the splash screen. Download it, save it as splash-icon.png in assets/images, and set it as the image of the expo-splash-screen plugin in app.json, with the background colour you want behind it.

What size should an Expo splash screen image be?

Expo recommends a 1024×1024 PNG with a transparent background. The image is not the whole screen: expo-splash-screen centres it on the backgroundColor you set, at the width given by imageWidth, 200 in Expo's example. So the logo stays sharp on every screen size without a full-screen image.

Can I use a JPG for the Expo splash screen?

No. Expo's docs say only PNG images are currently supported for the splash screen, and other formats make production builds fail. The tool always saves a PNG, so a JPG or WebP logo dropped in here comes out in the right format. Keep transparent areas transparent so the background colour shows through.

Why isn't my new Expo splash screen showing?

Expo's docs list three causes: app config changes only take effect after a prebuild; the splash screen should be tested in a preview or production build rather than Expo Go or a development build; and on iOS, SDK 52 and earlier can cache launch screens, which npx expo run:ios --no-build-cache clears.

How do I add a dark mode splash screen in Expo?

Add a dark entry to the expo-splash-screen plugin with its own image and backgroundColor, as in the app.json example on this page. If your logo is dark, make a light version for dark mode, run it through this tool too, and save it as splash-icon-dark.png next to the first one.

Do I need the app icon too?

Yes, it's a separate file. The splash icon only shows while your app loads; the app icon is what sits on the home screen. The Expo app icon generator makes the 1024×1024 icon.png, the Android adaptive icon and the monochrome layer from the same logo.

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything happens in your browser: ImgWrench resizes your logo on your own device, and it is never sent to a server or stored anywhere else. You can confirm this yourself by opening your browser's network tab while you use the tool and checking that no request carries your image data.
