ImgWrench's ICO to PNG converter opens a Windows icon file and saves every image inside it as a separate PNG. It reads both modern PNG-compressed icons and older bitmap icons, and keeps their transparency.

How to convert ICO to PNG

  1. Drop one or more .ico files into the tool above.
  2. Every image inside each file appears with its size.
  3. Download the PNGs one by one, or all of them as a ZIP.

What's inside an .ico file

An .ico holds a small directory of images, usually the same icon at several sizes. Large sizes, like 256 pixels, are often stored as PNG; smaller ones as bitmaps with their own colour depth and a transparency mask. ImgWrench decodes each one and turns it into a standard PNG.

Tips

  • Pick the largest image when you need to edit the icon; it has the most detail.
  • Need the reverse? The ICO converter turns a PNG back into a multi-size .ico.

Why ImgWrench

  • Every size, not just one. Nothing inside the file is skipped.
  • Old icons too. 1-bit to 32-bit bitmaps and PNG entries.
  • Private by design. Your files never leave your device.

Frequently asked questions

Why does one .ico give me several PNGs?

An .ico file is a container that usually holds the same icon at several sizes, such as 16, 32, 48 and 256 pixels. ImgWrench saves each one as its own PNG.

Is transparency kept?

Yes. Modern icons store transparency in an alpha channel and older ones in a separate mask; ImgWrench reads both.

Can I convert a favicon.ico?

Yes. Save the favicon.ico to your device and drop it into the tool to get every size inside it.

Why are there two images with the same size?

Some icons store one size more than once, for example at 8-bit and 32-bit colour. ImgWrench keeps both and adds -2 to the second file name.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything happens in your browser. Your files are never sent to a server, and you can confirm this in your browser's network tab.
