ImgWrench's App Store icon maker turns your artwork into the 1024×1024 PNG that Apple's guidelines ask for, with square corners so the system can apply its own rounded mask. The same crop also gives you the 512×512 Google Play icon.
How to make an App Store icon
- Drop your artwork into the tool above.
- If it isn't square, choose Contain, Cover or Crop. Keep the main shape centred.
- Tick Google Play icon if you're shipping on Android too.
- Download the PNG, or everything as a ZIP, and add it to your Xcode asset catalog.
Apple's app icon rules
Apple's Human Interface Guidelines list a 1024×1024 pixel, square layout for iOS, iPadOS and macOS icons. The system masks the square to produce the rounded corners, so icons should be provided square and unmasked. PNG is the recommended format for raster artwork, and sRGB, Display P3 and Gray Gamma 2.2 are the supported colour spaces. Xcode can generate every smaller size from the single 1024×1024 image for iOS and iPadOS.
Tips for an icon that reads at every size
- Fill the square. The corners are rounded for you, so don't leave a frame of empty space.
- Keep it centred. Apple advises centring the primary content so masking never cuts it off.
- Skip the fine detail. Apple warns that very thin lines lose crispness in the smaller sizes shown in places like Settings and notifications.
Why ImgWrench
