ImgWrench's Expo app icon generator turns one logo into the icon files an Expo app needs: the 1024×1024 icon.png, the foreground of Android's adaptive icon, kept inside the safe zone, and the monochrome layer for themed icons.
How to make your Expo app icons
- Drop your logo into the tool above. A square image with some space around the logo works best.
- Keep Icon and Adaptive icon ticked; add Monochrome icon for Android's themed icons.
- Download the ZIP and save the files in assets/images.
- Point app.json at them, as below, and rebuild.
{
"expo": {
"icon": "./assets/images/icon.png",
"android": {
"adaptiveIcon": {
"foregroundImage": "./assets/images/adaptive-icon.png",
"monochromeImage": "./assets/images/monochrome-icon.png",
"backgroundColor": "#ffffff"
}
}
}
}
Rename the downloaded files to match, or point the paths at the names they came with.
Expo's icon rules
Expo's "Splash screen and app icon" guide asks for a PNG icon, exactly square, and calls 1024×1024 a good size; EAS Build generates the smaller sizes. The icon should fill the whole square, with no rounded corners or other transparent pixels, because the system applies its own mask. Android's adaptive icon is made of a foreground image and a background colour or image (white by default), at least 512×512, with an optional monochrome image.
Android's safe zone
Android's adaptive icon guide sizes every layer at 108×108 dp. The outer 18 dp on each side are reserved for masking and effects such as parallax, and only the inner 66×66 dp is never clipped by a phone maker's mask. The tool draws your logo inside that inner area on the Adaptive and Monochrome icons, so it survives every shape.
Why ImgWrench
- Every icon in one go. Icon, adaptive foreground and monochrome layer from one logo.
- Safe zone built in. No guessing how much padding Android needs.
- Private by design. Your logo never leaves your device.
